Sleeping 5

Skylark Cottage is a dear little end terrace farm cottage, surrounded by fields full of the skylarks which give it its name, about 5 miles from Cupar (all facilities) in Fife. It stands just a little way along a farm track up on the hill outside the little hamlet of Glenduckie. Walking further along the track you breast a ridge which gives you a fabulous view across the Firth of Tay to the Sidlaw Hills beyond. (The Scottish hero William Wallace once made landfall on the shore beneath you.)

Glenduckie Hill is a SSSI and the surrounding countryside is famous for agates, which can be found in the fields. Wildlife abounds - you may see roe deer, hares, foxes, tawny and long-eared owls, buzzards and pheasants. There are also some interesting 'domestic' animals in the adjoining fields - Highland cows, Jacob and Ryeland sheep, a llama, alpacas - it's not often that a cottage comes with the makings of a zoo! (One species you will be glad not to find here, however, is the infamous Scottish midge.)

Skylark, however, has its own enclosed garden, ideal for children and pets, and an attractive conservatory has been added. Inside it is homely and comfortable; tenants can feel specially virtuous using the ultra-Green biomass central heating, provided by the wood burner in the sitting room (easy to use and full instructions given.)

There are numerous excellent and not-too-strenuous walks right from the door, which again makes the cottage very good for dogs (though of course, with stock in the fields, they should be kept under control at all times).

Nearby Newburgh (3m) has shops and a pub, while Cupar, on the way to St Andrews, has an excellent range of shops and eating places. From there, too, you can take the train to Edinburgh or Dundee. There is a Deer Centre at with children's attractions near Falkland, where you can also visit Mary Queen of Scots' turreted fairytale castle, and you have the lovely Fife beaches, golf at St Andrews etc. within a half hour drive.

To the east, you are within easy distance of the M90, which will have you in Perth, again in under 30 minutes. Beyond there, the Highlands beckon.

5 bags of pellets for the burner, (more can be purchased), the first £15 of electricity, bed linen and towels included!included. Pets welcome under control. Sorry, no smokers.
