The Mission Hall
Crovie
Banff
Aberdeenshire

Sleeping 4

The Old Mission House (at the far end of the village in the photograph above) is something very special indeed. Transformed from a former place of worship (which had to be formally deconsecrated before work could begin!) it has been a labour of love and inspiration over the last few years for the owner, who divides her time between Scotland and Italy. She has incorporated much from her adopted country into her Scottish home, to such dramatic effect that it has recently been featured in the Scottish Field.

View of Crovie The cottage is situated just a few feet from the shore in the tiny and picturesque conservation village of Crovie on the Banff coast, which sits on a narrow ledge between the cliffs and the sea and is accessed by a footpath which runs in front of these old fishermens' cottages. (Cars have to be left at the end of the village and the favoured means of transport for the last few yards - for everything from groceries to furniture - is the wheelbarrow!)

Mission Hall The owner's fabulous sense of style and artistic taste pervades the whole cottage. There is a central spiral staircase leading to two galleried upstairs bedrooms. The master bedroom has a crystal floor which was brought over from Italy, and the old pews of the Church have been incorporated into skirting boards, bed heads and partitions as well as the wood panelling in the kitchen, which is ultra-modern and extremely well equipped. It is open plan to the cosy sitting room, and an old fireplace which was discovered during the renovations forms a focal point to both. Another breath-taking feature is the main hall, with turquoise walls and deep blue floors and a specially designed, Italian crystal-topped table for formal dining.

Dining Room If you can bear to leave this wonderful location, there is much of interest in the country round about. Nearby Macduff (all facilities) was a 19th century spa town and has an attractive harbour. The Macduff Marine Aquarium is well worth a visit. The town more or less runs into Banff (10m), where you will find the spectacular Duff House, an elegant Adam mansion which now houses some of the National Gallery for Scotland's collection.

There are golf courses at both of these towns, and a sandy beach to the west just beyond Banff. In additional there are many excellent walks in the area, both along the coast and inland.

Heating is by electric storage heaters and open fire. £15 of electricity included!included. Bed linen and towels are included!included. No smoking. Short breaks available. Pets are welcome by arrangement.
