Lilac Cottage
Braemar
Royal Deeside
Sleeping 4
Deeside in the central Highlands of Scotland has been a popular destination for tourists since Queen Victoria conferred 'Royal' status upon it in the middle of the 19th century. The village of Braemar, 50 miles west of Aberdeen, became one of the jewels in its crown and remains so to this day, managing to retain its charm despite being such a tourist honeypot.
Lilac Cottage is near the centre of the village, but set a little back from the road, a very sweet, traditional, two-bedroom cottage, which has recently been refurbished to a high standard for holiday letting. All on one level, it is very suitable for those of limited mobility.
The accommodation consists of a large living room with wood-burning stove, a well-equipped kitchen with separate utility room, one double and one twin bedroom and bathroom. Oil-fired central heating make it a very cosy billet in the Highland winter and to the rear there is a private enclosed garden (furniture) for enjoying the sunshine at other times of the year. There is off-road parking and shed space for bikes etc.
The cottage is very well-placed for Braemar's shops, hotels and restaurants. You can walk straight out of the door and up the two hills which overlook the village, where you will like as not come face to face with a herd of the deer which roam there. Or get on your bike and cycle along the quiet road to the fine waterfall at the Linn of Dee. There is plenty of more strenuous walking in the mountains beyond, or, for a real workout, you can head over the hills on foot or mountain bike right across to Blair Atholl!
Braemar's golf course on the outskirts of the village is, however, surprisingly level. Fishing can be arranged in the Dee or in some of the lochans round about. The Glenshee ski area is just a 10 minute drive up the road.
For those who prefer to tour by car, there is a host of castles, keeps, stately homes and fine gardens to visit, including the Queen's own summer retreat at Balmoral. Ballater, a half-hour drive towards Aberdeen is another pleasant little town with excellent shops.
Bed linen, towels, the first £15 each of oil and electricity are
included in the rental Pets are welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
