These two delightful cottages are idyllically situated just yards from the shore near picturesque Carsaig on the southernmost side of the Ross of Mull, with glorious views across the sea to the misty isles of Scarba, Jura, Islay and Colonsay. While the immediate shore is rocky, there is an extensive sandy beach just a quarter of a mile away at Carsaig.

Wildlife is plentiful, with otters, red deer and eagles frequently to be seen. Painters are attracted to this island and to Carsaig in particular, and it is easy to understand why. Approximately the same distance in the opposite direction from Craignure is the beautiful and unforgettable island of Iona, famous for being the place where Columba first brought Christianity to Scotland in 563, and accessed by the little foot ferry (no booking necessary) from Fionnphort. During the summer there are boat trips from Bunessan (15m) and Fionnphort to the Treshnish Isles and Fingal's Cave on Staffa.

This is a beautiful unspoilt area, perfect for walking, fishing, painting or just relaxing all day on the beach. If you are interested in history Duart and Torosay Castles are well worth a visit. At Torosay you can take a ride on the miniature railway or admire the lovely gardens. Also worth a visit is Tobermory (50m), the only town on the island. The houses here are brightly painted and are grouped around the harbour. On the way back you could stop off at Dervaig and enjoy a performance at the Mull Little Theatre. The fabulous beach at Calgary should not be missed, and a drive up the west coast of the island affords yet more wonderful views.

At Pennyghael (6.5m) you will find a PO/shop, pub and hotel.

Accommodation (two cottages)

Pier Cottage (sleeps 4)

All the accommodation in this traditional whitewashed stone cottage is on one level. It has belonged to the McLean family for more than 45 years and therefore has a good 'lived-in' atmosphere. The kitchen and bathroom have been recently refitted and there is one double and a small twin bedroom. The spacious living-room has an open fire and a wood burning stove, while a vine flourishes on the large sun-porch. This is an ideal spot for children, who will delight in the freedom of the surrounding area. A lawn in front of the cottage extends down to the rocks and the sea, to some woodland and a natural garden.

Heating is by electric convector and halogen heaters, wood burning stoves and open fire. Bed linen and towels may be hired but are available for overseas guests only. Pets are welcome. No smoking. Payphone a mile away at Carsaig Bay.

The Library (sleeps 4/6)

The Library is a large Scandinavian-style log cabin set among trees at the end of a private road running from Carsaig Pier, on the south coast of Mull. Standing alone apart from nearby Pier Cottage, it is very close to the rocky shore and enjoys marvellous views over the sea to the distant islands of Jura, Islay and Colonsay.

Inside, there is a spacious open-plan living area with a well-appointed pine kitchen, a centrally-placed wood-burning stove and two sofa beds. (A section of the room can be curtained off to create a second double bedroom). An open staircase (not suitable for young children) leads up to a double and a twin bedroom upstairs. Outside the garden is enclosed.
