Those looking for a cosy retreat in a tranquil rural setting will just love Heathcote Cottage, near the border town of Jedburgh (5m, all facilities, swimming pool). Created from two former farm cottages and reached by a quiet country road, yet just 2 miles from the main A68 trunk road, it has sweeping views across the valley of the Ale Water. The cottage is deceptively spacious inside, with four large bedrooms, a comfortable sitting room with open fire, and separate dining room seating 8.
Outside, there is a secluded, grassy garden to the back (furniture, barbecue), and parking at the side.
This area, part of the 'Debatable Lands' and much fought over in the past by England and Scotland, amply repays exploration, with ruined abbeys, stately homes, and castles aplenty. An hour's drive will bring you to the beaches of the Northumbrian coast, Lindisfarne and Holy Island; Edinburgh too (38m) is just over an hour away. The pretty Border towns of Melrose, Kelso, Selkirk, Galashiels and Hawick, with their excellent wool and cashmere outlets, are easily accessible.
Walkers will enjoy the Southern Upland Way and St Cuthbert's Way, both of which are close at hand, and those who prefer their 'good walk spoiled' will find numerous good golf courses, two of the nearest being Minto (18 holes) and St Boswells (9 holes). For family outings, visit Harestanes Woodland Centre (5m) or the Jedforest Deer Park and Bird of Prey Centre (10m).

included) and open fire (first basket of logs included, more available for purchase). First £10 of electricity included. Bed linen and towels are included. Pets are welcome by arrangement.
