Halfcroft Cottage
Glenelg
Ross-shire

Sleeping 4

At Shiel Bridge take the turning to Skye, then after climbing up over Mam Ratagan you will descend to the little village of Glenelg which is located on the shores of the Sound of Sleat and has wonderful views across to Skye.

Glenelg is a delightful little village, not much more than a group of houses but with a shop and excellent pub/restaurant and here you will arrive at Halfcroft Cottage, a lovely, traditional, whitewashed cottage which has recently been superbly refurbished and offered as a holiday home.

The thick walls enclose a snug sitting room with open fire, (added cosiness to the oil-fired CH), an up-to-date kitchen with an Esse and standard electric cooker, a stylish bathroom and, upstairs, twin and double bedrooms. At the back of the house the small garden has an area of decking where you can relax with a book or enjoy a drink.

As the road running through Glenelg comes to a dead end at Corran, just down the coast, there is not much through traffic. During the summer a little turntable ferry plies between Glenelg and Kylerhea on Skye so you have easy access to the island without having to make your way back to the main road, should you wish to make a day trip. It is well worth a visit if only for the fabulous views from the little road which twists and turns down to Kylerhea (famous otter hide here) from Broadford on the far side.

The island of Skye is a well-known holiday destination offering superb walking and climbing, particularly in the famous Cuillins. The part nearest to Glenelg, the Sleat peninsula, is also called the Garden of Skye and here the Gardens at Armadale Castle are definitely worth visiting. At Armadale you can take the ferry to Mallaig and see the white sands of Morar and Arisaig. Last, but by no means least, you can enjoy a special gourmet meal either at Kinloch House (the hostess is Lady Claire Macdonald) or at the Eilean Iarmain Hotel.

However, visitors will find much to occupy them back on the mainland. There is riding at Shiel Bridge. The walking here is exceptionally good and, if you take the main road towards Skye you will pass the famous Eilean Donan Castle which is among the most photographed castles in Scotland. On the north side of Kyle you will find the charming village of Plockton complete with palm trees along the bay and first-class restauarants. Going even further north you come to Lochcarron, Shieldaig and the magnificent mountains of Torridon.

Closer to home are the impressive Glenelg Brochs, Pictish ruins just along the glen. They make a good (longish) walk or an even better cycle ride from the cottage.

Bed linen, towels and electricity are all included!included in the rental. Sorry pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted within the property.
