Sandaig Bay

The Eilanreach Estate
The Sound of Sleat,
Western Invernessshire

Cottages sleeping 6, 4 and 4/6

The Eilanreach Estate is a most beautiful West Highland Estate of rock and grass-covered mountains rising to 3000ft, tumbling streams, woodlands. a spectacular waterfall, and a rugged shore stretching 10 miles along mainland Scotland's West Coast. It borders on the shores of The Sound of Sleat, facing westwards across 3 miles of sea towards the dramatic peaks of The Cuilin Mountains on the Island of Skye, and southwards to the Islands of Eigg, Rhum and Muck, and is about 20 miles south of the Kyle of Lochalsh.

Highland cow Although isolated, it can easily be reached by car from the A87 at Shiel Bridge on Loch Duich, by nine miles of road that climbs and winds up Mam Ratagan (glorious views of The Five Sisters of Kintail) to Glenelg (hotel/restaurant, P.O., well-stocked General Store) and then, one mile on, reaches Eilanreach. Here one branch of the road follows the shallow River Glenelg for four miles up Glenbeag to a croft at the foot of the hills passing the remains of two well-preserved Pictish brochs - while the 'main' road (single-track with passing places!) winds a further eight miles southwards down the coast to peter out at the villages of Arnisdale and Corran on the shores of Loch Hourn opposite Knoydart.

map This is magnificant scenery on a grand scale, with the hills soaring up to 3000 feet. There are woodlands, a spectacular waterfall into the shallow River Glenbeag and two Pictish brochs to explore, wonderful walks, masses of quiet spots with stunning views to picnic in - and a good pub/restaurant in Glenelg. The coast is mainly rugged, but at Arnisdale and Sandaig Bay are sandy/light-shingle beaches, and it was at Sandaig Bay where Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water, for twenty years rented a lonely cottage on the shore he called Camusfearna and wrote vividly of his life with the otters and other animals. From April to September you can get across to the Island of Skye very easily by a 6-car turntable-ferry which crosses the narrow strait between Glenelg and Kylerhea (Forestry Commission otter-haven); and once on Skye you have a whole multitude of museums, restaurants, tourist attractions of all kinds, to visit.

View from North and South Three of the Estate cottages at Eilanreach are in a little gathering of houses about a quarter of a mile from the shore of The Sound of Sleat. They have all been redecorated and refurbished by their owners who have installed good modern kitchens, and the houses are cosy at all times of the year. There is a coin-operated automatic washing machine, tumble drier and a deep freeze for tenants' use.
