The Dunira Estate is about 3 miles in each direction from Comrie and beautiful Loch Earn in Perthshire. It is a lovely peaceful place with a very interesting history as it was bought in 1919 by the father of William MacBeth as a wedding present for his son (those were the days!) who straightaway ordered the rebuilding of the complex of farm workers' cottages into 'The Square', an elegant row of turreted buildings set around a courtyard. East Turret can be found on the corner of one of these buildings, an extremely comfortable first floor apartment at the top of a spiral staircase inside the actual turret and with superb views out over the grass gardens to the distant hills.
MacBeth's father made his money in shipbuilding on the Clyde during the First World War. In the 1920s, when there was a spell of high unemployment, he arranged for a train load of unemployed shipyard workers to be deposited each day at the local station to transform the Estate. The 9-hole golf course, putting green and cricket pitch which they created are no longer there, but the Lost Gardens remain as does the fabulous Arboretum, both just a few minutes walk from East Turret.
The apartment is large and bright. The snug living room has an open fire and just off it is a smallish but very well-equipped galley kitchen. The two reasonably-sized double bedrooms both have fine views. One of them has an extra single bed making the accommodation quite flexible. The whole is completed by a bathroom with an old-fashioned roll-top bath and a super-modern separate shower.
This area is ideally suited to almost all the activities you look for on holiday. On your doorstep you can enjoy lovely walks through the woods. For a stiffer challenge you can always try climbing Ben Chonzie just north of Dunira or Ben Vorlich via Loch Earnside. Only a short drive from the apartment, Loch Earn is a major centre for a wide variety of watersports: sailing, wind surfing, water-skiing etc. The road along the south shore of the loch has some beautiful picnic spots right at the water side. St Fillans, just before the loch, is a most attractive little village with hotels and a shop. There is also a very good golf course where even non-players can enjoy first-class lunches in the clubhouse. Fishermen will find stocked trout ponds near Comrie and there is riding six miles further on at Crieff Hydro (15 mins. drive). Comrie also has bikes for hire as this is excellent mountain-biking terrain. Other busy local attractions are Auchingarrich Wildlife Park and Drummond Castle.
Comrie has all facilities and a good restaurant. An hour's drive will bring you to the Fair City of Perth. Take a left turn, here, for Callander and the scenic Trossachs or continue on over Glen Ogle to Killin, Loch Tay, or the west coast near Oban. These trips are all possible in one day. Closer to home, drive up Glen Lednock from Comrie as far as the dam where you will find more delightful picnic spots as well as the De'ils Cauldron waterfall.
Heating is by electric night store heaters and open fire. The first £15 of electricity, bed linen and towels are
included in the rental. Sorry, no pets and smoking is not permitted within the property.
