Dowies Mill Apartment
Cramond
Edinburgh
Sleeping 2(4)
Edinburgh, like many other cities, has expanded to include what were formerly peaceful country villages. Fortunately, not all have been completely engulfed and some have succeeded in keeping their old world charm. A typical example is the old village of Cramond, which sits beside the Firth of Forth, surrounded by woodland, quiet yet full of character. There has been a settlement here for a very long time: in fact, a Roman artifact was discovered in the harbour not so long ago. Despite its peaceful air the village has a regular city bus service into town so you can forget about parking problems and leave the car at home.
Cramond is situated where the River Almond meets the Firth of Forth. Dowies Mill, an old stone-built mid-terrace cottage (circa 1690) stands on the river bank in a quiet lane which leads only to some attractive riverside walks. The Mill has been divided into two parts, and the upper one carefully converted into comfortable and charming holiday accommodation.
A short stroll will bring you to the harbour with pub and bistro. There is another pub and a famous bridge about two minutes upstream. The location is truly wonderful and there is parking at the door.
The apartment is light and roomy and on two levels. A spacious living room with wood burner looks out over the river and has three steps leading up to a very smart kitchen. A curving staircase opens out into a double bedroom with more river views and an en suite bathroom. The whole effect is one of style. Outside, there is a small terraced garden at the rear.
Should you wish to avoid the city centre for some of the time you will find golf courses, swimming pools and other attractions closer to home. The Forth Bridge is only a few minutes away and once on the other side you have a choice of exploring Fife, Perthshire, Stirling and the Trossachs, or remaining on the motorway and heading for the Highlands. All of these places can be visited in a day trip.
Special rates will apply for Festival and New Year periods.
Heating is by gas central heating and multi-fuel stove. The first £15 of gas and electricity are
included. Bed linen and towels may be hired. Up to two well behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted in the apartment.
