Colthouse Cottage
Kinlochmoidart
Nr Lochailort
Inverness-shire
Scotland
Sleeps: 11, Bedrooms: 6
Colthouse Cottage is situated on the Kinlochmoidart Estate, which covers 4000 acres of one of the most beautiful and historic areas of Scotland's west coast. It has a lovely position, sheltered by trees at the back and with open aspects to the front across grassland and a nearby pond, a haven for ducks and other water birds. There is a private grassy area around the cottage, which also has its own patio (furniture, barbecue available) and there is ample parking for several cars.
Inside, the house is roomy and comfortable, providing ideal accommodation for large family groups or two families holidaying together. It has a large sitting room with wood burning stove and patio doors to the terrace, a separate dining room, also with patio doors and with an archway to the well equipped kitchen which has an electric range-style cooker.
Visitors share use of the extensive grounds (there are a number of ponds and small lakes, so care is required with toddlers) and the estate also provides ideal opportunities for hill walking and fishing (fly fishing available by arrangement - £20pp per day). There are some lovely spots for lazy riverside picnics and the nearest sandy beach at Glenuig (inn serving excellent meals) is only 4 miles away.
At Kinlochmoidart, you are just to the north of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Britain. The lighthouse there is open to the public. There is another fine and remote sandy beach nearby at Sanna Bay, an RSPB reserve at Glenborrodale (16m) and the Ariundle Nature reserve, with woodland trails, at Acharacle (6m, shop, hotel) where you can also visit ruined Castle Tioram on its causeway in Loch Moidart.
Twelve miles to the north, at Lochailort, you join the legendary Road to the Isles, where the silver sands of Morar (not to mention an excellent golf course at Traigh), and the little fishing port of Mallaig (all facilities) are just a further half hour to the west. A vehicle ferry runs from there to Armadale on Skye. For more serious shopping, leisure centres etc., the nearest large town is Forth William (40m).
This land is steeped in history, being at the heart of the events of the '45 Jacobite Rebellion. Close to Colthouse Cottage stand seven beech trees, symbolising the Seven Men of Moidart, the only companions to accompany Bonnie Prince Charlie when he landed in Scotland to claim his throne. Evocative Glenfinnan, where he raised his standard, is just 21 miles away at the head of Loch Shiel.
