Broomhills Cottage,
Chesters,
Bonchester Bridge
Sleeps 4 (2 bedrooms)
As you cross the Scottish Border at Carter Bar you have a really wonderful view laid out before you. It seems as if the whole of Scotland lies there. Continue north for 7 miles then turn west along a single track road, taking care not to be too distracted by the scenery, and you will reach Broomhills Cottage.
The detached former farm cottage stands on a working farm (there may be some farm traffic) facing south and above the only two other houses and some steadings and looking directly back to the Border. There is an extensive grassy garden (furniture, barbecue) at the side and back of the house, secure storage for bikes and parking at the door.
The inside of the house has been renovated and furnished to a very high standard. The snug sitting room has a wood burning stove and the kitchen/diner is well equipped. The bathroom is downstairs. On the first floor, at the top of some quite steep stairs and under the coombed ceilings, are two good-sized bedrooms.
It is not often that you find yourself in such a beautiful and tranquil location yet still be quite close to so many attractions. The nearest of these is possibly the Jedburgh Deer and Farm Park at Mervinslaw (3m) with its rare breeds and falconry demonstrations. The cottage is about an equal distance from Hawick and Jedburgh. In both towns you will find a good range of shops, including outlets for cashmere and woollens, and leisure centres. Closer to home, Bonchester Bridge (4m) has a pub.
Walkers can choose between the Cheviot hills to the south or the Border hills further north and west. Jedburgh has a ruined abbey, a jail (reputedly haunted!) and Mary Queen of Scots' house. 10 miles further up the A68 and you arrive in the delightful little town of Melrose. Venturing even further north you finally reach Edinburgh in about an hour. If you go to the east there are the coasts of Berwickshire and Northumberland to explore including the town of Berwick, Lindisfarne, Alnwick Castle and the superb beaches of this area.
Kielder Forest Park (25m), also in Northumberland, offers a huge range of sporting and leisure activities such as walking, cycling, kayaking, riding, sailing and many other water sports. If, however, you wish to ride nearer the cottage (and this countryside is famous for its riding) the field next to the cottage is available for your own horse should you wish to bring it. Information on shooting and fishing is also available from the owners. For golfers, Minto, about 5 miles away, has a very good golf course.
Heating is by electricity (£15
included) and two wood burning stoves (Logs
included). Wi-fi is available. Bed linen, and towels are
included. Pets are welcome by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
