The Lodge, Auch Estate
Ask someone to picture their ideal traditional shooting lodge and they would very possibly describe The Lodge on the Auch Estate, whitewashed, traditional, gracious yet welcoming. This 31,000 acre Highland Estate comprises some of the most breathtaking scenery in the west of Scotland. It centres on the magnificent glen which runs up from Tyndrum towards Rannoch Moor and Glencoe, between Ben Dorain and Beinn Chaorach. It is, furthermore, crossed by the West Highland Way, which passes within a few hundred yards of its cottages. There is trout fishing on the river Orchy and in Loch Lyon and shooting and stalking in season can be arranged. Walkers, climbers and sportsmen will therefore find it a slice of paradise, while less energetic guests will be no less thrilled by the abundant wildlife, and the peace and freedom of such fabulous surroundings.
Even railway buffs will find something to enjoy in this wild and remote place, for the Lodge is within sight of two impressive viaducts, very similar to the Glenfinnan viaduct immortalized by the Hogwarts Express!
To the front, the Lodge has extensive lawns, beyond which are woodlands, and a sweeping drive to the door. Inside, it has an elegant central hall, a very well-equipped kitchen/breakfast/ morning room, a quite baronial yet intimate Jacobean dining room, and a delightfully snug sitting room with welcoming sofas and an open fire by which to relax and reminisce about the activities of the day. And if you still have energy left, there is even a games room. Upstairs, all the six bedrooms have wash basins, one of the three double bedrooms has en suite facilities and there are two further bathrooms. Oil fired central heating ensures that you will have nothing to wish for in terms of comfort.
Just half a mile from the main A82 trunk road, the Lodge is well placed for touring. Glencoe is just over 16 miles to the north west, while both Oban and Fort William are 40 miles away. From Oban you can take boat trips to Iona, Staffa, Mull and some of the other islands. From Fort William you can take the Road to the Isles, or why not take the train all the way from Tyndrum to Fort William and then the steam train to Mallaig which will enable you to actually compare these wonderful viaducts at first hand!
In the other direction, it is only 17 miles to the top of Loch Lomond, with its famous golf courses, boating and sailing possibilities. The Trossachs, Loch Katrine, even Glasgow, are all within easy reach.
The nearest shops, hotels, garage etc. are at Tyndrum, with a hotel also at Bridge of Orchy.
Bed linen, towels, heating and electricity are all
included in the rental. The Lodge is on a working farm, so guests should be aware that there may occasionally be farm vehicles about and that dogs should be kept under control. Up to three well behaved dogs are welcome by arrangement. Sorry, no cats, and smoking is not permitted within the Lodge.
