Achleek Cottage on Loch Sunart

Sunart, Moidart and Loch Sheil - even the names have the tang of the heather and the isles in them! Achleek Cottage, occupies a glorious position on the Laudale estate on the south side of Loch Sunart with wonderful views down the loch and across to the mountains of Moidart and Sunart on the other side. The cottage was originally a tackman's house. (Tackmen were the representatives or estate managers for the Highland Clan chiefs, and their office inevitably declined with the Highland Clearances). Achleek is snug and comfortable and has just been refurbished to a high standard.

It is an area rich in atmosphere and history. This was the heartland of Jacobite support for Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, and it retains its air of haunting romance to this day. Looking West There are few roads in the area (but lots of wonderful walking) and still less in the way of human settlement. The nearest and only village of any size is peaceful Strontian (3m. shops, hotels, restaurant), grouped around a green. In 1722, its lead mines, now long gone, yielded the first traces of the element strontium, and gave it its name. From there, you can drive on to the very end of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the westernmost tip of mainland Britain (lighthouse), with its glorious beach at Sanna (36m) and boat trips from Kilchoan. However, if you do suffer from withdrawal symptoms for a bit of urban bustle and a supermarket, Fort William (all facilities, golf course, leisure centre) is only 23 miles away by the Corran Ferry. Glencoe, another haunting and sombre spot, is also 23 miles away by this route and offers many famous walks and climbs. To the north west, Arisaig (40m), in addition to its legendary silver sands, has a beautiful golf course above the shore.

Achleek Cottage

Continuing past the house to the south west down Gleann Geal, you come to Lochaline (17m) where a little car ferry plies across to Fishnish on Mull, so a day visit to Iona is perfectly feasible.

The Laudale estate offers deer stalking in season; this would be available to the tenants of Achleek House and there is also loch fishing available.

Heating is by electric central heating and open fire (included!included). Bed-linen and towels are included!included. Pets are welcome by arrangement. No smoking allowed within the cottage. Please note, there is an outside area with garden furniture.
